This is an authentic 1799 printing of Demosthenis Selectae Orationes (Selected Orations of Demosthenes), edited and annotated by the noted English classical scholar Richard Mounteney. Published in Eton by M. Pote and E. Williams, this tenth edition (Editio Decima) serves as a fascinating piece of 18th-century educational history, originally produced for British schoolboys studying classical Athenian statesmanship and rhetoric. The volume features the original Ancient Greek text accompanied by extensive Latin commentary and annotations.
The highlight of this specific copy is the inclusion of its original, intricately engraved fold-out map of Ancient Greece (Tabula Antiquae Graeciae), which sits directly opposite the title page. This historic map details mainland Greece and the Aegean islands, complete with latitude and longitude markers designed to help early scholars track the geographic context of Demosthenes' famous speeches.
Condition
In terms of condition, this 225-year-old volume survives in honest, completely unrestored antiquarian condition. It is bound in its original 18th-century full calf leather binding, featuring original gilt horizontal bands on the spine and its genuine black leather title label which remains entirely intact and readable. The exterior leather exhibits significant scuffing, drying, and surface wear consistent with its great age, alongside visible cracking and wear along the outer hinges. Internally, the text block remains complete and tightly bound, and the valuable folding map is well-preserved. Pages show expected age-toning and light foxing characteristic of hand-press paper from this era, but the text and map remain entirely crisp and legible throughout.
