A fantastic antique Napoleon III bureau de dame with exquisite Boulle marquetry. Boulle work gets its name from Andre Charles Boulle (1642 to 1732) who was famous for the technique of veneering with tortoiseshell and brass and pewter in elaborate designs. Boulle work furniture was particularly popular in France in the Napoleon III period (from 1852). This bureau de dame bears the ivorine label of James Schoolbred & Co of London. They were designers, manufacturers and sellers of fine furniture from the early 1860's. It is likely that this is a French piece that was retailed by Schoolbred in their London shop.
Decorated throughout with foliate cut brass and tortoiseshell marquetry panels; the top with brass three quarter gallery, above a fall front opening to a fitted interior, with three drawers, a well and a cream leather skiver; on slender cabriole legs descending from foliate cast mounts to conforming sabots. A stunning rare piece, perfect to add a burst of persoanlity and soul to any modern interior.
Condition
Some small losses to the marquetry and brass trim. Shows signs of wear and tear as it is old and has been used, but only adds to its character. Great decorative item which would look fantastic in any home or business interior.
Please look at photos closely as they form part of the item description.
Dimensions
92cm total height incl. gallery, 75 cm desk surface height, 66cm width, 47cm depth (70cm open)
