A fantastic antique oak tambour fronted desk. A striking desk that is full of history with makers marks and fascinating inscription.
The lock is inscribed HH best British made and there is an ivorine label to the drawer for Hendy and Son house furnishers Newton Abbot. The brass inscription is to the Rev and Mrs Brook Hirst from the congregation of the Wesleyan Church of Newton Abbott in 1922. This piece has not travelled far in its life as we have sourced it locally in South Devon.
The desk itself is beautifully made with tambour front and twin pedestals. The brass handles have an arts and craft design very much in the manner of the Cornish Newlyn copper and brass works which may have supplied the brass work. The tambour opens to reveal a fitted interior with slides and drawers. The tambour has its original working key. Closing the tambour also locks the left hand bank of drawers (released on opening the tambour. All mounted on original castors.
A rare period piece, perfect to incoporate into a modern interior to add soul an character to a space.
