A superb antique reading lectern. Made from rosewood with heavy brass and cast iron base. With ivorine label on the reverse for Carters Literary Machine.
Famed for his various inventions under the Trade Marked banner 'Literary Machines', John Carter was a Victorian inventor / cabinet maker operating out of 6A Cavendish Street, Portland Place, London from the 1880's. Winning 20 gold medals and awards, Carter was maker to The Queen (Victoria), Prince of Wales and Emperors of Russia and Germany having gained a reputation for quality
This is a stunning quality piece. With beautiful cast iron base and and heavy brass fittings. It has its original book rest catches to hold a book or music sheet open. The height is fully adjustable and lectern surface adjustable to angle. The rosewood has a wonderful hue and tone and dates from the Victorian period. A fabulous rare piece, perfect to incorporate into a modern interior to use and enjoy.
Condition
Shows signs of wear and tear as it is old and has been used, but only adds to its character. Great decorative item which would look fantastic in any home or business interior.
