Here for sale is a fantastic antique apothecary stand made by Philip Harris & Co. Ltd. The company was originally based in Digbeth, Birmingham, and was started by Thomas Ellis, a surgeon, in 1817. At the time Philip Harris would have been only 15 or 16 years old; he joined Ellis in 1825. Philip Harris started as a manufacturer of chemists' and surgical products, adding medicines in 1866. Philp Harris & Co. became a limited Company in 1913.
The bottles are original, one of which also bears the label for Philip Harris & Co. Another bottle is for testing of Typhoid fever including instructions on how to carry out the test. Typhoid fever was discovered in 1880 and this stand probably daes from the early part of the 20th century when Typhoid was still a problem in many parts of the world with poor sanitation and for the military.
Beautifully made item which is full of history.
Shows signs of wear and tear as it is old and has been used, but only adds to its character. Great decorative item which would look fantastic in any home or business interior.
