A fantastic antique reading lectern. With ivorine makers mark for John Carter's Patent Literary Machine. Carter's invalid furniture included these reading stands, and were designed to be used over beds. This one is particularly fine with elaborate mechanisms for adjusting reading angles. Carter's tables are all beautifully made. With heavy cast iron base and brass turned upstand. The Carter name is cast to the brass also. They were marketed at injured soldiers to aid recovery, This reading table is designed to be used over a bed or chair and can be tilted and raised for the best position. This example dates from the 1880's
