Rare Antique B.J. Simmons & Co. Theatrical Costume Transit Crate. A fantastic piece of social and theatrical history, this antique wooden shipping crate dates from the late Victorian to Edwardian era (circa 1892–1915). It features a wonderful, authentic patina with heavy iron corner reinforcements, making it an ideal decorative statement piece, rustic blanket chest, shoe bench, or industrial coffee table.
The lid features its original, rare paper trade label for the legendary B.J. Simmons & Co., Historical and Fancy Costumiers, located at King Street, Covent Garden, London. Founded in 1857, they were the premier costume house for London's West End theatres and early British cinema.
Below the main maker's mark is an authentic, partially intact Great Western Railway (GWR) "Parcel Docket to Pay" transit label, documenting its actual journeys across the historic British railway network.
Solid, sturdy, and structurally sound. The wood has a beautiful, rich aged tone with expected character wear, knocks, and historic scuffs from its working life. The iron brackets are firmly attached. The rare paper labels are beautifully aged and faded, adding immense character, but remain readable as shown in the photos.
Condition
There are signs of historical woodworm. We have treated it to be sure. Shows signs of wear and tear as it is old and has been used, but only adds to its character. Great decorative item which would look fantastic in any home or business interior.
