Here for sale is a fantastic antique set of illustrations in their original frame. Using the 19th century printing method "colour from wood" by which the print is achieved by engraving the image onto wood and then using different colours to build up the picture. The 1878 book, "The Diverting History of John Gilpin" wall illustrated by the illustrator Randolph Caldecott and printed by Edmund Evans. This is a set of early framed prints from this book, possibly these were printed off the blocks and not used in books as the double page prints do not have a fold in them. It is fascinating to see how the colours were built up and the effect is amazingly vivid.
The backing board was falling apart when we found this lovely frame, so a framer has replaced the back but keep the original framers label. Perfect for any interior to add character and personality.
The frame is original and has some cosmetic cracks. Shows signs of wear and tear as it is old and has been used, but only adds to its character. Great decorative item which would look fantastic in any home or business interior.
