An exceptional, highly collectible antique first edition portfolio titled "Living Anatomy", published in 1900 by Longmans, Green and Co. (London & New York). This scarce volume represents a fascinating historical intersection of physiological medical science and late Victorian fine art photography.
The work is a collaboration between the celebrated British artist and art master Cecil Laurence Burns (R.B.A.) and medical practitioner Robert John Colenso (M.D.). Designed specifically to serve as a convenient reference for painters, sculptors, modelers, and designers, it consists of oversized, loose anatomical plates. Each plate features high-contrast photography of living models captured in active athletic poses paired directly with an overlay detailing the active underlying muscular structure.
A superb, rare addition to any collection of historic photography, antique art reference materials, or medical curiosities. Hardcover portfolio folder with internal loose plates, complete with original fabric closure ties. This is an ex library copy with 38 out of 40 of the loose internal cards or plates are present. 
Condition
Area of missing blinding to spine. Worn cover to the portfolio, a much loved piece. Fabric closure missing to one side.  Shows signs of wear and tear as it is old and has been used, but only adds to its character. Great decorative item which would look fantastic in any home or business interior.
